Does UNC Chapel Hill allow AI help with college essays?

Publishes no AI-specific policy for application essays

What UNC Chapel Hill publishes

As of our last check, UNC Chapel Hill publishes no policy specifically addressing applicants' use of AI on application essays. Nothing on its admissions pages either permits or prohibits AI feedback, brainstorming help, or editing tools. Publishes no rule on applicants' own AI use. Its admissions FAQ now says the office does not use AI anywhere in evaluating applications; earlier in 2026 the same FAQ described using AI for data points on essays and transcripts.

Silence is not permission. With no published rule, the Common App's own fraud policy and the school's general integrity expectations still apply: the essay must be the applicant's own work. Getting feedback that leaves you the author is a different act from submitting text you did not write, but where a school has stated nothing, that distinction is yours to make and yours to verify.

Policies can change after our check date (October 16, 2026), and you are responsible for verifying UNC Chapel Hill's current policy yourself before you rely on it, here or anywhere else.
